Reflecting the Concept of Social Rank in Courtly Texts Methods and Strategies.

Examination Defining the points of interest of social connections and investigating the standards as per which these connections create is, maybe, one of the most confounded assignments for an author of elegant texts.Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Reflecting the Concept of Social Rank in Courtly Texts: Methods and Strategies. explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Because of a huge assortment of elements, beginning with the multifaceted nature of the initiative model received by the leader of the state, up to the structure of the general public being referred to and the customs of the time, the methods for characterizing social statuses transforms into a significant issue. Be that as it may, with the assistance of a variety of artistic apparatuses, the writers of probably the most celebrated cultured writings, Benvenuto Cellini with his Vita and Baldesar Castiglione in his The Book of the Courtier figure out how to make certain about the points of interest of social connections in a precise way. One of the most well known delegates of elegant writings journalists, Castiglione utilized grouped strategies for presenting his concept of social statuses in court. Despite the fact that his idea of social statuses was additionally to a great extent dependent on the possibility of manliness, Castiglione utilized various apparatuses so as to persuade the peruser in the need to follow the standards of sexual orientation profiling. The instances of sexual orientation based social positioning inside the court framework can be found all through the content: â€Å"I bear to ladies as these women might suspect, however for my own good†1. In any case, a few analysts contend that Castiglione was, truth be told, the first to propose that the dignified connections among people ought to be founded on the standards of valor, alongside the thoughts of â€Å"kindness and honorable courtesy†2. In this manner, aside from manliness, resp ectability standards ought to be referenced as the components required for the court social rankings to base on, Castiglione explained3. Castiglione’s content is an ideal case of humanist standards working their way into the general public of the XV century.Advertising Looking for paper on near writing? In addition to the fact that it allows imagining the court framework moving, yet in addition interface the genuine peruser and the inward peruser. As opposed to Castiglione, Cellini utilizes increasingly clear techniques to characterize social statuses. Actually, Cellini ignores fusing progressively unobtrusive scholarly gadgets and movements the accentuation from a slight mimicry of social connections in his work, as Castiglione proposes, to out and o ut educating on the rules that social connections must be founded on. With regards to characterizing the points of interest of Cellini’s composing style, one must give him kudos for utilizing the symbolism made all through his work to further his potential benefit. In addition to the fact that he molds characters effectively, yet additionally realizes how to utilize them to establish a connection with the peruser. One of the most evident â€Å"instructions† concerns the manner by which Cellini imagines male †female connections. Cellini clearly demands male prevalence, almost contrasting ladies with objects eventually of his work: â€Å"As a foundation to the ladies, there was spread an espalier of characteristic jasmines in full beauty†5. The given generalization of ladies regularly happens on Cellini’s memories, and is much of the time made by the storyteller: â€Å"Now I should cause you to comprehend that the lady is mine†6. Another device utilized by Cellini in his endeavor to depict the arrangement of social positioning inside the court framework, the change from a craftsman to a craftsman additionally merits an appropriate mentioning7. Truth be told, Cellini rehashed the whole idea of being a retainer, focusing on the centrality of workmanship as the way to isolate the situation of a squire and whatever other position that a regular citizen may conceivably take. At last, such apparatus as self-portrayal merits a careful examination. In fact, while considering the methodology that Benvenuto Cellini uses to depict the standards of social connections and the idea of social status, one will unavoidably understand that the writer doesn't dissect the condition that as of now exists be that as it may, rather, molds it as per his vision of society.Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Reflecting the Concept of Social Rank in Courtly Texts: Methods and Strategies. explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Lea rn More thus, Cellini resorts to the techniques that can be characterized as mimesis. When investigating his work, one will in the long run note that Cellini makes a model of social conduct for individuals to follow and, along these lines, characterizes the current social statuses as opposed to giving his critique on the previously existing ones. In spite of the fact that scarcely being an artistic gadget, self-portrayal despite everything causes the structure of social status to appear to be increasingly tasteful, since it permits characterizing the pioneer and, thusly, following the course of the bearings that shape the general public and award its individuals with specific social statuses. As indicated by Gardner, the given model adds a masterful touch to the technique picked by Cellini; she states unequivocally that Cellini’s Viva broke new grounds as â€Å"an case of an individual’s endeavor to form his own notoriety and chronicled inheritance through a durable s cholarly portrayal of his character and his art†8. One should give Cellini acknowledgment for his concept of utilizing manliness as the key device for characterizing the standards of social positioning. The given apparatus works fairly well with regards to the content, yet barely appears to be effective all alone. Another device that fills its need of characterizing the points of interest of the social definition of the period and simultaneously persuades the crowd is a cautious stylization of the content. It is surprising that the decision of jargon made by the writer has stood the trial of time effectively: â€Å"the personal history makes things simple by tending to the peruser in an agreeable, whenever adapted, English [†¦]. A proportion of the status of these interpretations has been the way that nobody binds to supplant them with new, current ones†9. Along these lines, the utilization of manliness standards characterizes the jobs that people should take insid e the court by focusing on the need for the previous to partake inside the framework, and for the last to stay a piece of the background.Advertising Searching for exposition on similar writing? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Find out More It is very impossible to miss that the procedure of typification of ladies is for all intents and purposes depicted in Cellini’s book as he makes reference to the way toward chiseling a lily, which fills in as the metonymy for Gismondo’s spouse (whose name is entirely referenced in the book): â€Å"I guaranteed the gem ought to be twice tantamount to the model.†10 Correspondingly, Cellini accept that ladies shouldn't take dynamic part in court gatherings, just as they should not offer and, more regrettable yet, shield their perspective in court; despite what might be expected, ladies are seen as maids, the pretty faces that are not expected to have any criticalness of the court procedures and course of occasions. Subsequently, the indication of the creative independence appears the following evident stem in Cellini’s plan of social structure inside the court. Aside from clarifying that an individual from the court needs to experience a change from a crafts man into a craftsman, Cellini expresses that the last should appreciate creative self-sufficiency for his activities to tangibly affect the artist’s subjects. It merits focusing on that Cellini utilizes an exaggeration to demonstrate his point by asserting that aesthetic heads â€Å"made a crown of creative magnificence for their city above anything the world had seen†11, which shows that his methods for mirroring the social status were fairly cruel and clear. The distinctions in the techniques picked by the writers being referred to are characterized to a great extent by the objectives that these writers sought after recorded as a hard copy their books. While Castiglione was plainly attempting to reveal some insight into the occasions of the age and give a genuinely not too bad record of the last mentioned, Cellini was clearly attempting to fortify his control over the country considerably more. Therefore, the portrayal of the social status in two writings didn't exac tly coordinate, Cellini’s one being progressively centered around the subjection issue When it comes to characterizing the distinctions in the manner that Cellini and Castiglione depicted the social statuses of their timespan, it ought to be referenced that Castiglione utilized a wide scope of apparatuses that filled their own one of a kind need and were to mirror the genuine condition of the general public. Clearly Cellini’s assume the portrayal of the social positioning in his elegant collection of memoirs is more than evident †it is a direct, in your face indication of Cellini’s perspective, which is a long way from being popularity based. The creator obviously puts his stake on the expressivity of his contentions and the convincingness of his discourse, which can be handily followed in the various emphases of specific components of his contention. The previously mentioned manliness, in this way, removes the general concept of law based connections, just as vote based perspectives towards ladies; very on the inverse, manliness fills in as the way to curb ladies to the strength of men and to repress any endeavors of opposition against it. From multiple points of view, Cellini’s self-portrayal characterizes the way wherein social statuses were delineated in elegant writings of the time. Castiglione, on the inverse, wants to communicate his concept of the court members’ social jobs and the position o

Poetry Rhythm And Metre †Part 1

Verse Rhythm And Meter †Part 1 Verse Rhythm And Meter Part 1 Verse Rhythm And Meter Part 1 By Simon Kewin Past verse composing tips have taken a gander at rhyme and similar sounding word usage. Another central part of wonderful language is its cadence. This post is the first of two that will take a gander at this subject and the related idea of meter (or, on the off chance that you like, meter). In the English language, musicality is made by a progression of pushed and unstressed syllables. This is something we as a whole do normally when we talk, frequently without acknowledging we are doing it. In the word â€Å"poetry†, for instance, most perusers would normally pressure the main syllable and not the second or third. Utilizing upper casing to demonstrate the focused on syllable you could explain the word like this : PO-e-attempt. Saying it with various anxieties †po-E-attempt or po-e-TRY †will most likely stable totally off-base. The writer has consistently to have an ear for how her or his words will sound when perused out resoundingly. Likewise with rhyme, the peruser will consequently select any rehashed designs in the expressions of a sonnet and respond to them. The words will begin to sound progressively melodic, increasingly noteworthy. More consideration will be paid to focused on syllables and this, maybe in mix with rhyme or another gadget, will loan weight to specific words and thoughts. To outline the utilization of musical language in verse, take for instance the initial lines from Gray’s Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard: The check in time tolls the sound of separating day, The lowing crowd twists gradually oer the lea, Odds are, most perusers would peruse those lines with these focused on syllables : The CURfew TOLLS the KNELL of PARting DAY, The LOWing HERD twists SLOWly Oer the LEA, As should be obvious, the example is standard. The lines comprise of a rehashed example of an unstressed syllable followed by a focused on syllable. Dark has picked each word with extraordinary consideration, to guarantee that they fit into this musicality. The cadence isn't subjective; rather it mirrors the significance of the words. Its moderate normality tolls well with the sound of the ringing ringer (the â€Å"curfew†) and furthermore with the trudging steps of the dairy cattle as they walk home. Where there is a reasonable example like this all through a sonnet, this is alluded to as the poem’s meter. This doesn’t essentially imply that a sonnet needs to thoughtlessly follow that design. Some verse abstains from meter totally †for instance Anglo-Saxon refrain, (for example, Beowulf) or progressively present day free section. Yet, even where there is a meter, writers will regularly leave from it to some extent, for instance dropping or including syllables to a great extent, maybe to make the language sound increasingly naturalistic. The meter might be viewed as the essential musicality of a sonnet, yet varieties to it can even now be presented. You’ll discover the ear can in any case select a general musical impact in any event, when there is a considerable amount of variety from it. This can be a fine parity to strike for the writer. Verse that follows its meter also carelessly can begin to sound sing-melody and comic. Too little adherence to the meter and the melodic impact of the cadence is lost. Consider, for instance, the accompanying lines from the opening of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 : Let me not to the marriage of genuine personalities Concede hindrances. Love isn't love On the off chance that you read this out loud you should ready to hear a general meter like that of Gray. Simultaneously, there is impressive variety and a carefully metrical perusing would sound extremely odd. Shakespeare was very much aware of his meter however permitted himself to veer off from it. There are, truth be told, various standard meters regularly utilized by artists, and some helpful terms to get to holds with to examine them. These will be taken a gander at in an ensuing post. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION. Organizational History It was 1886, and in New York Harbor, workers were constructing the Statue of Liberty. Eight hundred miles away, another great American symbol was about to be unveiled. Like many people who change history, John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, was inspired by simple curiosity. One afternoon, he stirred up a fragrant, caramel-colored liquid and, when it was done, he carried it a few doors down to Jacobs Pharmacy. Here, the mixture was combined with carbonated water and sampled by customers who all agreed this new drink was something special. So Jacobs Pharmacy put it on sale for five cents a glass.  Pembertons bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, named the mixture Coca-Cola ®, and wrote it out in his distinct script. To this day, Coca-Cola is written the same way. In the first year, Pemberton sold just 9 glasses of Coca-Cola a day.  A century later, The Coca-Cola Company has produced more than 10 billion gallons of syrup. Unfortunately for Pemberton, he died in 188 8 without realizing the success of the beverage he had created.  Over the course of three years, 1888-1891, Atlanta businessman Asa Griggs Candler secured rights to the business for a total of about $2,300. Candler would become the Companys first president, and the first to bring real vision to the business and the brand. (The Coca cola Company website) Its popularity would not stay within the United States for long, though, because in the year of 1906, Coca Cola was bottled in Cuba and in Panama. Bottling operations were soon started in Hawaii the next year, then in the Philippines, France, Belgium, Bermuda, Colombia, the Honduras, Italy, Mexico, Haiti, and Burma in later years. By the year of 1940, the famous soft drink was bottled in forty countries. Advertising for the cola has included many product slogans including, The Pause That Refreshes, which was used in 1929, Have a Coke and a Smile, which was used in 1979, and Always Coca Cola which was used in 1993 when s ales from this soft drink exceeded ten billion cases worldwide. (The Coca cola Company website) Organization structure and Span of Control All organizations have some form of more or less formalized structure that is the framework for getting things done. Structure is the pattern of realtionships among position in the organization and among members of the organization. Structure makes possible the application of the process of management and creates a framework and creates a frame work of order and command through which the activities of the organization can be planned, organised directed and controlled. (Mullins 2005) According to (Amstrong 2009:365)Organizations vary in their complexity, but it is necessary to divide the overall management task into a variety of activities, to allocate these activities to the different parts of the organization and to establish means of controlling, coordinating and integrating them. The structure of an organization consists of units, functions, divisions, departments and formally constituted work teams into which activities related to particular processes, projects, produc ts, markets, customers, geographical areas or professional disciplines are grouped together. The structure indicates who is accountable for directing, coordinating and carrying out these activities and defi nes management hierarchies the chain of command thus spelling out, broadly, who is responsible to whom for what at each level in the organization. Mechanistic vs Organic structures Mechanistic Organic High formalisation Low formalisation Narrow span of control Wide span of control High centralisation Low centralisation Hard change Easier to changeEasier We can say Coca-Cola Companys structure is a tall structure, a hybrid of both mechanistic and organic models. The organization has a more centralized structure, however in recent years there has been a movement towards decentralization for easy managemant in regions. The central point of The Coca-Cola Company is on responsiveness. The complex integrating mechanisms are characteristic of an organic structure. The surveys and interviews used by the company allowed information to flow from the bottom-up, and the intranet allows for information to be exchanged laterally. According to surveys done it have make the Company to pursue simplification and standardization (The Coca-cola Company Website). Centralization and high standardization are associated with a mechanistic structure. 2.2. Span of Control Span of Control arises in line authoority and refers too the number of subordinates who report directly to a given manager or supervisor. (Mullins 2005) If the span of control is too wide, its difficult to supervise the subordinates effectively and this places more on the manager. The Coca-Cola Company currently employs approximately 92,800 employees up to december 2009. According to a general details obtained from the companys website, there are at least 5 hierarchical levels at the corporate level. Eg there is aboard of Directors, Operating group leadership and Functions leadership. This span of control seems slim for the CEO of such a large organization. The CEO is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team. This team consists of each head of the eight operating groups abovementioned, and also has other top executives in areas like innovation and technology and marketing. Although there are only six people that answer directly to the CEO, the CEO is able to receive inpu t from a wide variety of divisions because of this leadership team. Since the team is comprised of members from various divisions, the CEO will be able to obtain a wide variety of information. The move to decentralization has caused structural changes for the Company. Generally, The Coca-Cola Company does a good job of managing its hierarchy of authority. Considering they have a tall structure, they are still able to keep to some extent more organic style of management, allowing them to be more flexible to changing conditions. The CEO and CFO both have six people that report to them. (Amstrong 2009:424) Types of change There are three types of change: strategic, operational and transformational. Strategic change Strategic change is concerned with broad, long-term and organization-wide issues involving change. It is about moving to a future state that has been defi ned generally in terms of strategic vision and scope. It will cover the purpose and mission of the organization, its corporate philosophy on such matters as growth, quality, innovation and values concerning employees andmcustomers, competitive positioning and strategic goals for achieving and maintaining competitivemadvantage and for product-market development. These goals are supported by policies concerning marketing, sales, manufacturing, product and process development, fi nance and human resource management. Strategic change takes place within the context of the external competitive, economic and social environment, and the organizations internal resources, capabilities, culture, structure and systems. Its successful implementation requires thorough analysis and understanding of these factors in the formulation and planni ng stages. (Amstrong 2009:424) The coca cola Company are as other many comapanies always forced to change due to competition from their competitors like pepsi, also some environmental issue make the company to change their way of Manufacturing and changing they bottle printing method which were claimed to destroy the environment. Operational change Operational change relates to new systems, procedures, structures or technology that will have an immediate effect on working arrangements within a part of the organization. But its impact on people can be more significant than broader strategic change and it has to be handled just as carefully. (Amstrong 2009:424) Cocacola companies always changes the systems, procedure and Technology soas to satisfy its customers need.Like changing their bottle type, addition of more product etc. Transformational change Transformational change takes place when there are fundamental and comprehensive changes in structures, processes and behaviours that have a dramatic effect on the ways in which the organization functions. (Amstrong 2009:424) This happen when there is a change in country policy and reguations which force some structure change. Some other management of change issues is Coca-Cola decentralised its organisational structure by cutting half of the staff at its Atlanta headquarters and moving the regional chieftains closer to their local markets. In India, decision making has been moved further down to different areas of that diverse country. Other is Company uses the incremental method in decision making. Especially in the last 20 years or so, the board was extremely conservative and looking to avoid any drastic changes. However, recently they used the unstructured decisionmaking model. This was demonstrated in 2004 through the process that CEO Isdell used when creating the com panys Manifesto for Growth when the company show the sign of decline. Rather than modifying what the company has been doing, the company surveyed about 400 of their top managers what they thought was problematic in the company. Based on information in the surveys done, 150 leaders in the company met to create solutions for the problems. The alternatives were analyzed thoroughly and all final decisions were made by groups.

Schools Should Ask Students to Evaluate Their Teachers Free Essays

Schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers. There are with no doubt a lot of good and experienced teachers, but in my opinion there are also a lot that do not belong in the classroom. Schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers in order to avoid choosing bad and inexperienced teachers, in order to learn what students like and dislike about the teaching methods and to make them feel more valuable for the school. We will write a custom essay sample on Schools Should Ask Students to Evaluate Their Teachers or any similar topic only for you Order Now First of all, a good teacher should have enough educational experience, he should know how to make himself understood, he should treat his students with respect, he should be helpful and concerned. A lot of teachers don’t have these qualities. If teachers are evaluated by their students and their opinions are really taken serious, I think that this problem would be if not entirely removed then at least reduced. Teachers play an important role in student’s lives and they should be very carefully chosen. Second of all, the quality of teaching is also very important and it is something that the administration of school cannot accurately estimate. Students should be able to grade and evaluate the teaching methods in class. They observe teachers’ work every day and can say what is easy or difficult for them, which activities they enjoy the most or what kind of exams they prefer. In addition to this, knowing that their opinions matter would make students feel more valuable for the school and less controlled by the teachers. Students would feel better and more confident if they know that they are not the only ones that are going to be grated at the end of the year. Moreover, evaluating teachers is good for the students because is teaches them honesty and responsibility. To sum up, I think that evaluating teachers by students would be very useful for the whole educational system. It helps choosing the right teachers, the right teaching methods and it is beneficial for the students themselves. How to cite Schools Should Ask Students to Evaluate Their Teachers, Essay examples

Use And Origin Of Ricin Biology Essay Example For Students

Use And Origin Of Ricin Biology Essay Ricin is a protein extracted from the seeds of the cas tor bean works ( Ricinus communis ) . Ricin is a lectin and a member of a group of ribosome-inactivat ing proteins like abrin ( from the seeds of the rosary pea, Abrus precatorius ) , that prevent synthesis of protein in eucaryotic ribosomes. Ricin is one of the most toxic substances and as such was one time known to be a chemical arm ( Agent W ) but is now capable to the Chemical Weapons Convention. However, ricin has been used as a toxicant for condemnable and terrorist intents. We will write a custom essay on Use And Origin Of Ricin Biology specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Ricin is an highly toxic toxicant, and therefore can kill even if applied in a little sum. Therefore, the debut of rapid, extremely sensitive chemical and biological/immunological analytical methods capable of observing the toxin at or below ng/ml degree is of critical importance ( see, for illustration, Kalb and Barr, 2009 ; Lubelli et al. , 2006 ; Uzawa et al. , 2008 ) . In instances where Castor beans or petroleum ricin readyings are the perchance unsafe toxicants, ricinine can besides function as a biomarker ( see, for illustration, Mouser et al. , 2007 ) . The chemical is peculiarly lifelessly because it can be inhaled, ingested, or swallowed and is rapidly broken down in the organic structure and is virtually undetectable. There is presently no counterpoison to ricin, although a prospective vaccinum has been developed that has been successfully tested in mice. Ricin is a powerful protein cytotoxin derived from the beans of the Castor works. Castor beans are ubiquitous worldwide, and the toxin is reasonably easy to pull out ; hence, ricin is widely available. Ricin s significance as a possible BW toxin relates in portion to its broad handiness. Outline1 HOW IT IS OBTAINED2 B. Acute Toxicity of Ricin10 Speciess, sex11 Path HOW IT IS OBTAINED Ricin toxin, found in the bean of the Castor works, Ricinis communis, is one of the most toxic and easy produced works toxins. The bush like cosmetic Castor works, Ricinus communis ( Euphorbiaceae ) , originated in Africa and Asia, and has been cultivated and distributed throughout the universe. The one-year production of Castor oil seed exceeds over 1 million metric metric tons ( Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, 2009 ) . Ricin is a by-product of Castor oil production: when Castor beans are crushed, they form a mush from which Castor oil is extracted, and ricin is what remains. The waste mash from this procedure is 3-5 % ricin by weight. The seeds of the works have three chief components: oil, Castor oil, which is the acylglycerol of ricinoleic acid ; a mildly toxic alkaloid ricinine and several isoforms of a extremely toxicant glycoprotein ricin present up to 5 % in the seeds. Although adaptable to a broad temperature scope, it fails to defy to subfreezing temperatures and withstand best in elevated year-around temperatures. Brazil, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, and Thailand are the states which commercially cultivate most of the seeds. Castor oil is found in many normally used substances such as pigments, varnishes, and lubricating oils, and is besides used as a cathartic. After oil isolation, the staying seed bar may be detoxified by heat intervention and used as an carnal provender addendum. The seed hulls are similar to barnyard manure in their fertiliser value. The toxicity of Castor beans has been known since antediluvian times and more than 750 instances of poisoning in worlds have been described. Although ricin s deadly toxicity is about 1,000-fold less than that of botulinus toxin, ricin may hold significance as a biological arm because of its heat stableness and world-wide handiness, in monolithic measures, as a byproduct of Castor oil product ion. .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 , .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .postImageUrl , .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 , .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:hover , .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:visited , .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:active { border:0!important; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:active , .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981 .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u04c99fb43adfa81d4afd52ac19eb6981:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Romeo and Juliet/new ending EssayB. DESCRIPTION OF THE AGENT Identity and Physicochemical Properties Ricin is a 66-kilodalton ( kd ) globular protein that makes up 1 % to 5 % by weight of the bean of the Castor works, Ricinis communis. The CAS Registry Number of ricin is . In a pure province, ricin is a white crystalline pulverization. It is a water-soluble glycoprotein dwelling of two polypeptides, termed A and B ironss, which are linked by a disulfide bond ( ASSB ) . The amino acerb sequence of ricin ( or ricin D as the toxic fraction from the beans is called ) was resolute by Funatsu et Al. ( 1978, 1979 ) . The A concatenation contains 265 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 32 kDa ; its sugar content is 2.6 % . The isoelectric point of the A concatenation is 7.34. The B concatenation of 260 aminic acids and four internal disulfide bonds has a molecular weight of 34 kDa and its sugar content is 6.4 % . The A concatenation has enzymatic belongingss ( ribosomal RNA N-glycosidase, EC 3.2.2.22 ) responsible for the toxicity of ricin, while the B concatenation is a lectin binding to galactose-containing glycoproteins and glycolipids on the surface of mark cell constituents. The usage of X-ray crystallography surveies was used to work out the 3-dimensional construction of ricin ( reviewed by Lord et al. , 1994 ) . The physicochemical and photochemical belongingss of ricin have late been assessed ( Gaigalas et al. , 2007 ) . Stability Because the husk left over from Castor oil processing can be used to feed cowss, a great trade of attempt was dedicated to its detoxification ( Balint, 1974 ; European Food Safety Authority, 2008 ) . High-temperature denaturing ( A ; gt ; 80 A ; deg ; C for 1 H ) and chemical methods ( oxidization with K permanganate, H peroxide, I, etc. ) were put frontward to destruct the toxin ( see, for illustration, Barnes et al. , 2009 ) . In the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol, which reduces the disulfide bond fall ining the A and B ironss, the toxicity of ricin is lost ; remotion of 2-mercaptoethanol, nevertheless, allows the reconstitution and reactivation of the toxin. Ricin is degraded by papain but merely easy by trypsin. The destiny of ricin in the organic structure is incompletely understood. Use The toxin-rich husk by-product of Castor oil industry has been used to kill mice and moles. Conjugate solutions of ricin and cell-specific antibodies are experimental antineoplastic immunochemotherapeutic agents ( Sandvig and new wave Deurs, 2005 ; Stirpe et al. , 1992 ) . Recently, transgenic rice and maize engineered to bring forth a merger protein consisting the Cry1Ac endotoxin of Bt and the ricin B lectin fractional monetary unit have proved to be insecticidal to insects that are otherwise able to digest Cry toxins ( Mehlo et al. , 2005 ) . Mode of action Once it was thought that the toxic action of ricin readyings in mammals is due to its haemagglutinating consequence, but this activity was shown to be associated with the structurally similar, but atoxic agglutinins present in the Castor bean. It is now good established that ricin inhibits protein synthesis in eucaryotic systems by catalytically demobilizing the 60S fractional monetary unit involved in the interlingual rendition procedure. The structural facets of biochemical interaction of ricin and other ribosome-inactivating protein ( RIP ) toxins from workss and Fungis were wholly assessed ( Kozlov et al. , 2006 ; Stirpe and Battelli, 2006 ) . Briefly, the B concatenation binds to galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine-containing glycoproteins and glycolipids in eucaryotic cells. The binding to come up receptors can be inhibited by brain sugar or lactose in vitro. It appears that both ironss facilitate the incursion by endocytosis of the toxin into the cell. The B concatenation, nevertheless, aids the toxin in translocating to endosomal marks every bit good. Once in the cytosol, the A concatenation cleaves a individual A base from the 28S ribosomal ( Ribonucleic acid ) RNA within the 60S ribosomal fractional monetary unit, rendering it unable to adhere the elongation factor 2 which accordingly leads to an apprehension of protein synthesis. A individual A concatenation molecule can demobilize 1500 ribosomes per minute and kill the cell. In add-on to suppressing protein synthesis, ricin was shown to arouse programmed cell death, cause oxidative emphasis, release proinflammatory cytokines, modify cell membrane construction and map, and impair atomic DNA ( reviewed by Stirpe and Battelli, 2006 ) . Lipase activity of ricin was besides clearly shown ( Morlon-Guyot et al. , 2003 ) . .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff , .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .postImageUrl , .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff , .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:hover , .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:visited , .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:active { border:0!important; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:active , .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u22ee79deb39827348a5e427512cef0ff:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Conflict theory1 EssayToxicity Toxicity to Laboratory Animals Although the manner of action of ricin at the molecular degree is known, the mechanisms responsible for the clinical and deadly effects of the toxin are still inadequately understood. Representative carnal toxicity informations for ricin administered by different paths are shown in Table 1. The fluctuations in the acute toxicity values reported in the literature are chiefly due to mixture of the readyings used in the trials ( reviewed by Balint, 1974 ) . The symptoms of ricin poisoning manifest easy, normally 12 hour after disposal, and include instead sudden effusions of paroxysms and opisthotonos, followed by palsy of the respiratory centre, finally taking to decease. Causeless toxic condition is normally due to consumption of Castor beans ( for recent illustrations, see Aslani et al. , 2007 ; Soto-Blanco et al. , 2002 ) . Laboratory trials with seeds showed biddy to be the most immune species ( the lethal dosage was 14 g/kg ) ; sheep and Equus caballus were more sensitive ( deadly doses were 1.25 and 0.10 g/kg, severally ) . The toxin is pyrogenous in mammals ( Balint, 1993 ) . In the serum of animate beings treated with ricin, antibodies specific to ricin hold repeatedly been detected ( see, for illustration, Griffiths et al. , 2007 ) . Ricin is extremely toxic upon injection and inspiration. Using transmittal negatron microscopy, Brown and White ( 1997 ) ( see besides Griffiths et al. , 1995b, 2007 ) examined the histopathological alterations in the lungs of rats upon ricin inspiration. The animate beings were exposed to an LCt30 ( the concentration in air that killed 30 % of the open animate beings ) of 11.21 mg/min/m3 dosage of the toxin. Necrotic alterations were evident in the capillary endothelium and type I epithelial cells, accompanied by intraalveolar hydrops 12-15 H after exposure. Table 1. The Constitution and Three-Fifths Compromise essays

The Constitution and Three-Fifths Compromise essays The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was held from the months of May to September, at the Philadelphia State House. Representatives from twelve of the thirteen colonies attended, to debate a wide range of constitutional provisions from the Bill of Rights to the power of taxation. The issue on the mind of almost every representative was what kind of government was best for a republic? Certain states submitted plans for a republican government, however, the most popular was the plan submitted by the Virginia delegation lead by James Madison. The Virginia Plan called for a government with three distinct branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. Using Montesquieus theory of checks and balances it was intended to ensure that no group could have too much authority, which could lead to tyranny. Although the delegates supported most of the proposed principles of the Virginia Plan, they were in disagreement in certain areas of the plan . The highest debate concerned the section on representation in the legislative branch. The Virginia Plan proposed that representation in the legislatives houses would be based on population of the state. Small states objected saying that it would leave them helpless in a government dominated by large states. In turn, they supported plan proposed by New Jersey, that gave all states an equal representation regardless of the population. The New Jersey Plan set up a two-part legislature, where representation in the House of Representatives was based on population and in the Senate each state was guaranteed a fixed two representatives. The issue of representation transformed into the debate over who would be counted as part of a states population. Delegate from southern states argued that slaves should be counted for the purposes of representation but not for the purposes of taxation. Representatives of Northern states felt the exact opposite, and argued that slaves should be counted when dete...

The 8 Best Scholarship Websites and Search Tools

The 8 Best Scholarship Websites and Search Tools SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Searching for relevant scholarships is perhaps the most frustrating part of the scholarship application process. There are so many awards out there, but it’s hard to know which ones are worth applying to without carefully sifting through an overwhelming amount of information. To make your search just a little bit easier, we’ve compiled some of thebest scholarship websites(and offlinesearch tools!) you can use to find scholarships. Of course, some are better than others - I’ll also go into the strengths and weaknesses of each scholarship search method. At the end of the post, you’ll find tips for getting the most out of these scholarship search tools. They’re only helpful if you know how to use them effectively and efficiently - these strategies will help you navigate the (sometimes confusing) world of scholarship search tools. 7 Helpful Online Scholarship Search Tools Online tools are awesome because you canaccess huge databases of awardsfrom the comfort of your laptop. There’s no question that there’s almost an overwhelming number of scholarshipslisted on each of these online tools - the question is whether or not you can find scholarships that actually apply to you. Some of these search tools are verypolished, whereas others look kind of scrappy. Some keep your information private, whereas others subject you to a LOT of college spam. Ultimately, though, they all provide access to info about thousands of scholarships. Your own priorities will dictate which search tools you’ll prefer. To help you figure that out, I’ve listed the strengths and weaknesses of eachof these tools after trying them out myself. I think it's difficult to come up with a strong scholarship application strategy without a general idea ofboth what awards are available and what these awards look for in student applicants. I'd encourage you to spend a few hours just exploring these databases - just to check on what's out there - before doing a more focused search (perhaps with the assistance of a guidance or college counselor). Here’s the good stuff - the most popularscholarship search tools: College Board's Scholarship Search This site is perhaps the most well-known scholarship search tool available. It searches for awards based on so many criteria that you may find scholarships in some unexpected places. You can enter in as much or as little identifying or demographic information as you’d like. The scholarship search tool then lists any scholarship award you may qualify for based on the info you’ve entered. If you already have a specific award in mind, you can use the search function to search for it in the College Board scholarship database. Obviously, the more information you enter, the more relevant and helpful the search results will be. Some of the information you can enter includes minority status, disability status, religious affiliation, and veteran status. Pros You don’t have to sign up for anything, or provide any personal identifying information, in order to use the scholarship search. The scholarship search results include basic information on eligibility requirements, award numbers/amounts, and application deadlines. You can also select whether you’d like to search for awards based on financial need, academic achievement, or both, which is an awesome function. Cons Lists sweepstake scholarships where you have to sign up for different sites (and subject yourself to spam) in order to apply. It’s the responsibility of the scholarship organization to update policies, awards, or requirements - many things may not be up to date, although the site itself updates regularly. You can’t enter in academic information (like GPA or ACT/SAT scores) to filter out awards where you may not meet these criteria. You’ll have to sift through individualawards, all with varying eligibility requirements, to see which ones may be a good fit. The College Board is best known as the creator of the SAT, but its scholarship search is one of the best options out there. Scholarships.com Scholarships.com claims to be the largest free scholarship search resource available, with over 2.7 million scholarships listed in their database. You have to make an account, but Scholarships.com promises to keep your information private. The site lets you save, â€Å"favorite,† or remove scholarship matches associated with your account. Pros The site claims to update daily, although just like with College Board, responsibility lies with the actual scholarship organization to provide new info. It’s easy to see how many awards are given (and how much the awards are worth) witheach scholarship listing. The save/favorite/remove functions make it easy to pare down awards you’re interested in. Their privacy policy easily allows you to opt-out of having your personal information shared. Cons There are scholarship â€Å"ads† at the top of your match results from sweepstake-esque scholarship programs. These awards aren’t exactly illegitimate, but they’re created to get you to sign up for various sites or services. You can’t search by keyword or by scholarship type. Fastweb You can enter academic info (GPA, intended major) and other helpful identifying info (ethnicity, citizenship status, military status) to get scholarship matches when you make a profile with Fastweb. You can also enter in other relevant activities - like sports, student activities, SAT/ACT score, educational background, and career goals - to possibly get a more tailored list of awards with Fastweb.Again, the more specific you can be with personal information, the more relevant the scholarship matches will be. Pros The scholarship search results include basic information on eligibility requirements, award numbers/amounts, and application deadlines. Scholarship matches are listed in order of application deadline, so you don’t have to worry about checking out awards where the deadline’s already passed. Scholarships are rigorously vetted (according to Fastweb), so you won’t have to worry about submitting personal information to a sketchy organization and falling prey to a scholarship scam. Cons You have to sign up with your email address, birthday, phone number, and address, which opens you up to spam. Just like with the College Board, you may have to sift through awards that you find undesirable. Some of them are sweepstakes awards, whereas others are scholarship programs with clear ulterior motives and/or political agendas. It’s the responsibility of the scholarship organization to update policies, awards, or requirements - many things may not be up to date. ScholarshipMonkey.com This scholarship tool claims to offer over 1 million scholarships, from over 4,000 sources, worth more than $3 billion. It’s unclear how often they update their database, however, so it’s impossible to know whether the listings are valid without checking them out yourself. You can search for scholarships in three ways: Setting up a profile and seeing scholarship matches Searching by keyword (e.g. an academic or extracurricular interest) Checking out lists of scholarships (e.g. scholarships for women, nursing scholarships, scholarships by major) Pros You don’t need to sign up for anything or make an account to use the keyword search or the â€Å"list† search function. In theory, the profile-matched scholarships shouldpresent better scholarship options than just randomly searching for awards. Cons The keyword search function isn’t particularly helpful. It doesn’t sort by relevance, so it's easy to miss important awards. The scholarship preview descriptions don’t tell you how much money is at stake. In order to find out what you could win, you have to click through to read more. A lot of the links to scholarships are outdated. I got a lot of â€Å"internal server errors† or â€Å"application errors† when trying to read more about various awards. To work around this problem, you could always Google the award name to learn more. If you make a profile to get scholarship matches, your information won’t remain private unless you opt out from their standard policies upon sign-up. Cappex With Cappex, you receive scholarship matches by completing an online profile. They don’t ask you about as many personal characteristics as the College Board, but you can enter basic academic info (like your weighted and unweighted GPA). It’s unclear whether this info helps match you to scholarships or whether it’s just provided to colleges who may be interested in you. You’re asked a lot of questions about your college preferences, presumably to match you with scholarships available at different schools. In reality, I imagine a lot of this information is actually provided to the colleges themselves (along with your GPA). Cappex has a special â€Å"Be Recruited† program which may help varsity athletes connect with schools to earn scholarships for sports. Pros Cappex seems to be fairly selective with the scholarships listed. It's easy to sort the scholarships into â€Å"will apply/might apply/will not apply† categories for future reference. It's easy to tell how much anaward is worth, what you have to do to apply, etc., without having to jump through too many hoops. Cons This site seems to serve more as a college search tool than a scholarship search tool. You’re forced to provide information about your home address, which is presumably given out to third parties (you might get a lot of brochures in the mail from interested schools). â€Å"Featured† scholarships (i.e. ads) are listed at the top of your matches. Your Regular Old Search Engine Using a search engine like Google gives you a lot more freedom and flexibility when you’re searching for scholarships. Google is also much better at presenting relevant, legitimate results if you have specific keywords in mind. You might find individual awards or lists of relevant scholarships that others have already put together. An obvious (put important) search tool for scholarship awards Pros You’ll be directed right to scholarship organizations’ pages. You’ll likely come across compilations of scholarship programs like the ones we do here at PrepScholar. It’s easier to search for scholarships based on niche interests, skills, or passions. It’s also an important tool if you plan on looking into local scholarships (which you should definitely do - they tend to be less competitive than national awards). Cons There’s a lot more irrelevant information to sift through if you’re not specific enough with your keywords. You should be wary of ads, sweepstakes, or any scholarship program where you have to enter sensitive information (e.g. your social security number) or credit card payment. You’ll have to keep careful notes on which scholarships you’re interested in. PrepScholar Our blog has tons of free content on available scholarships, whether you're looking for information onpopular individual awards or broader guides to scholarship applications in general. Here are some of our most popular posts to get you started: Top scholarships for freshmen and sophomores Top scholarships for high school juniors Top scholarships for high school seniors Top minority scholarships Top engineering scholarships How to win a full ride scholarship Colleges with full ride scholarships How to win a local scholarship How to win a Gates Millennium scholarship How to win a Coca-Cola scholarship How to win a Florida Bright Futures scholarship How to win a McDonald's scholarship Bonus Offline Scholarship Search Tool: Your Guidance and/or College Counselor Shockingly, there are places you can go besides the internet to get information about scholarship programs. If you’re serious about your scholarship research, you should definitely schedule a meeting with your guidance or college counselor. They likely have insider info on scholarship programs that may be a good fit for you, especially when it comes to local awards. If you have unique skills or needs (e.g. you’re hoping to be recruited for a college sport), your counselor may also be able to help guide you through the process - this mentorship definitely isn’t something you can get from an online scholarship search tool. The VeryBest Scholarships Websites As you can see, you have a lot of options when it comes to the tools available to search for scholarships. The question of which one youshould usewill, like most things, come down to personal preference. I’d encourage you to at least briefly check out all of the above search toolsto see which ones might appeal to you. If you only have the time or the patience to check out one or two scholarship tools, though, I would recommend The College Board and Scholarships.com. I like College Board for a few reasons - first, it looks the nicest. I know this isn’t super important, but I really appreciate an easy-to-use and aesthetically appealing site. Perhaps more importantly, I also like that they’re the most thorough in their scholarship match questionnaire, ensuring that no rock will go unturned when it comes to finding appropriate awards. Finally,it’s a big plus in my book that you don’t have to make an account and provide identifying information in order to use the service. I’d recommend Scholarships.com because it’s perhaps the largest scholarship search engine out there. It tends to do better than other engines (especially Fastweb) when it comes to matching students with appropriate awards. I also appreciate that you can opt out of having personal info shared with third parties. None of these search options may be perfect, but some are better than others. Tips for Using Online Scholarship Search Tools You may have noticed that a lot of the cons listed above areshared among many scholarship search tools. If you want to avoid the most common drawbacks that come with using popular search tools, follow these tips and strategies. If You Don't Want to Be Spammed With Emails or Snail Mail: Avoid search tools that require you to provide an email address or physical address unless it’s clear that they don’t provide that information to third parties. Make an email address that’s dedicated only to these scholarship search engine profiles.Instead of getting overwhelmed with spam in your personal account, you'll just get emails in this throwaway account. Opt out of having these search engines pass on your info to third parties whenever possible. If You Want to Find Best-Fit Scholarships: Use more than one scholarship search strategy. Some databases may be better equipped to list relevant scholarships for you based on your interests and background. Don’t just look at just big, impressive awards - they may be particularly tempting, but it’s a waste of time and energy to apply to them unless you’re an exceptionally good fit (competition for those scholarships is usually crazy). Look for local scholarships. You may have more luck finding awards that are geared towards students in your area. If You're Feeling Overwhelmed by the Number of Available Awards: Don’t let your scholarship search creep into time you spend on schoolwork and important extracurriculars. Your grades, in particular, should be your #1 priority - higher grades will help you win merit scholarships (that you don’t even have to apply for!) to certain schools. Plan on applying to 8-10 scholarship programs, and be strategic about it. Approach it like you would your college apps - a few â€Å"reach,† a few â€Å"safety,† and a few â€Å"target† awards. Keep your own notes (try an excel or Googlespreadsheet) with informationon the scholarships you’re interested in and the criteria you care about - e.g. deadlines, application components, award amounts, and eligibility criteria. It’s important to have all this info consolidated, especially if you’re using multiple search tools. What's Next? MARKETING CASE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

MARKETING CASE - Essay Example Further, the CRM deployment team did not try and have different software for different countries or product lines. Essentially, the CRM team ensured that the sales force wherever they are use the same system because they believe that the customer experience is â€Å"universal†. This motto of standardization of point of contact experience and integration with the larger business drivers and objectives meant that the CRM system has been developed to address tomorrow’s problems as well and as the team puts it, they are in the business of offering â€Å"solutions†. What could have been done differently is that the software could have been customized for certain product lines which have different customer experiences. Though the case explicitly mentions why this was not done, I do believe that top tier integration can go hand in hand with bottom tier customization which is essential in a globalized world economy where the ability to think global and act local is often the differentiating factor between global

Film - Essay Example Therefore, Robert De Niro favored him by deploying other tactics and campaigns to portray him as the best. This was seen in his campaign slogans. Thirdly, Robert De Niro had a conflict of interest, which was unethical. He developed propaganda that favored the president leading to his re-election. However, the conflict of interest emanated when he felt jealous that the media did not recognize him as the person behind the president’s re-election. This made him want to call the press to tell the truth about the president re-election leading to his death. Fourthly, Robert De Niro did not strengthen the public trust, but instead fed them with lies in favor of the president. This is because he lied to the public that the president was a clean man, despite the sex scandal that was fresh in the people’s mind. When the people realized his lies, he changed the tune and fabricated information regarding the missing people in Albania. Lastly, Robert De Niro failed to foster informed decision through open communication. He was dancing to the tune of the president because he did all that the president wanted. He was not open to receive information from other people who were also interested in finding a solution to the problem. Wag the Dog may be interpreted to mean diverting the public attention from the truth or something important to a less significant issue. In the movie, the most important point, which was going to determine the outcome of the election, was the sex scandal that befell the president. It was in the public, and everyone knew it. However, Wag the Dog was realized when attention was diverted to the fake constructed was about Albanian terrorists. The aim was to divert the attention of the media to dwell on the false war and stop spending time on the sex scandal. However, this did not do much since the CIA detected the fake annotation and never wanted to fail the

Free Essay - The Poser of Guilt in Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter :: Scarlet Letter essays

The Poser of Guilt in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a book that goes far into the lives of the main characters. After establishing the main characters--Hester, Pearl, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth--he shows how each decision they made affects all the others. Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth all felt guilty at one point in the novel. Hester had "dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam, and a face which, besides being beautiful from regularity of feature and richness of complexion, had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes" (50). Hester, here described as a beautiful woman, had committed adultery. Because of her sin, her punishment was shame by the branding of the scarlet `A'. She simply accepted the punishment. The scarlet letter makes people look at Hester differently, but she doesn't seem to care. Hester created the `A' to be very elaborate to make people notice it. Having the sin out in the open let her relieve any guilt. The `A' was meant to punish Hester for eternity. She was to wear it till she died, and then it was going to be engraved on her tombstone. While in the forest, Hester made clothes for people in town. Because she had sinned, she was not allowed to make "the white veil which was to cover the pure blushes of a bride" (76). After a few years, Hester had changed the meaning of her scarlet letter, "they said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength" (141). Her "punishment" had become an honor. Although Hester tore off the letter and went to England with Pearl, she returned to Boston and put the scarlet letter back on. Hester was certainly not the only person affected in all of this. Roger Chillingworth had a "slight deformity of the figure" which later reflected the transformation his soul would make (56). In the first meeting of Hester and Chillingworth, Hester asks, "Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?" and Chillingworth replies, "Not thy soul. No, not thine!" (70).

Long Term and Short Term Causes of the Arab/ Israeli Conflict

The Arab Israeli conflict. The Arab/Israeli conflict is a conflict between the Arabs and the Jews over a small piece of land known as the holy land which is an area in the Middle East of the Arab world. The Arabs call the land Palestine, the Jews call it Israel but both religions have strong religious links with the land. There is conflict between the two religions because they both believe that the land belongs to them. it all started back in 135 AD when the Jews were expelled from theyre homeland in Palestine causing them too spread out across Europe creating the Diaspora. Although the jews had been forced to leave the homeland they never lost their identity as jews and still longed too return to their†¦show more content†¦in 1918 britain aided by the arabs captured palestine from the the ottoman turks but britain had now made too many promises that hey couldnt keep . Many Arabs opposed British troops because of Englands failure to fulfill its promise and were also getting angry about the increase of jewish migrating to palestine. Arabs became concerned that Jewish immigration would threaten their position in Palestine which lead to large scale attacks on the jews. At the time of Hitlers dictatorship in Germany, Jewish immigration increased dramatically in 1933. An Arab revolt started which Britain suppressed with the help of Zionist militias. Zionist settlements climaxed in 1936. In 1947, Britain forbid Jewish refugees from nazi concentration camps to land in Palestine to prevent war between Jews and Arabs, which resulted in worldwide criticism of Britain. Britain withdrew itself from the situation handing over the mandate over Palestine, leaving the United Nations to deal with the situation. The United Nations proposed that Palestine was divided into two states, one for the Arabs and one for the Jews, however the Arabs opposed this idea claiming that the UN plan allotted too much territory to the Jews. the arabs thought it was unfair that the jews should get more land beca use the arabs were by far the larger population but because of the holocaust the was a lot of sympathy for the jews and this may be why the got more land.
